New York, USA

It’s been a while since I have posted but I am back and ready to catch up on some of my layover posts! December was a very busy month! Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

On the 12th December, I flew to New York and had the most amazing layover. I bid for this flight as I have always wanted to visit New York around Christmas time. We landed into JFK around 8:30am, but because of the heavy traffic and long drive to the hotel, we didn’t actually arrive into the hotel until around 12pm. I decided to head out straight away, and do something I have always wanted to do – go ice skating in Central Park!! I got changed, and then walked to Central Park. It was freezing cold, so I made sure I wrapped up well.

I thought it would be really busy, but as it was still quite early, I only queued for 5 minutes. I bought my ticket and skate rental and then made my way onto the ice! Ice Skating in Central Park has always been on my bucket list after seeing it in so many movies. It was definitely a ‘pinch me’ moment and listening to all the Christmas songs in the background made it feel so festive.

I didn’t skate for very long as the skates were so painful and I didn’t have the thickest socks on. Not wanting to blister my feet, I left and searched for some lunch. I stopped off at a deli and got myself a bowl of pasta, and then walked towards Fifth Avenue to do some Christmas Shopping.

I did some shopping and then walked to probably the most famous Christmas tree in the world – The Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree. Every year, New York goes all out with this Christmas tree so I was looking forward to seeing it and all of the thousands of lights – It definitely wasn’t disappointing!

After walking around for hours, I got myself a hot chocolate from Starbucks to warm up and then it was time to meet one of my best friends, Becky! Becky works right by the World Trade Centre shopping mall so we met there after she finished work and then walked to a nearby restaurant to have dinner and a catch up. It was so good seeing her, especially right before Christmas. We sat for hours chatting and then finally called it a night around 9pm as we were both exhausted from a long day.

On my way back to the hotel, I decided to stop by the Rockefeller Centre one more time to see the Christmas tree all lit up at night. I was so glad I did as it looked completely different and so much more magical. It was truly beautiful.

I eventually got back to the hotel room around 10pm, absolutely shattered after being awake for more than 30 hours! It is such a shame the layover is only 24 hours as I really wanted to visit Dyker Heights and see all of the houses decorated for Christmas, but I just didn’t have enough time. I still had the most amazing layover and managed to tick off so many bucket list wishes! It was truly incredible.

I slept like a baby, and then the next morning, I was up around 6am to start getting ready for the flight back to Dubai. I always love the drive from the hotel to the airport as we go right through Times Square so we get one final glimpse of the city before we leave.

  1. How did you manage to cram so much into such a short time? Totally agree with you in that the layover should definitely be longer to recover after such a long flight. Don’t Emirates realise how much you’ve got to see and do lol?
Like you, I’ve seen that Christmas tree in so many films but didn’t realise how gigantic it is and how truly magical it looks. So glad you managed to do so much – even the skating, completing it without the dreaded blistered tootsies. Looking forward to the next destination xxx
