I was rostered Cambodia, but a day before the flight, I was sent a swap request for Geneva, Switzerland which I quickly accepted! Geneva is one of the hardest flights to get as everyone bids for it because the allowance is so good! So when I saw the email, I snapped it up straight away as I have always wanted to visit Switzerland.
We departed Dubai around 9am, and just over 6 hours later, we landed into a very cloudy looking Geneva! It was already 2pm by the time we checked into the hotel, so I changed quickly and then met a girl from the flight downstairs to head into the city.
We took the bus, and then got off at the main station, Bel-Air. We walked towards the Geneva Water Fountain (Jet d’Eau) and took a few pictures along the lake. I was expecting it to be a lot colder than it was as it was surprisingly mild. It was a beautiful area but I think in the summer it would be even better as the mountains were hidden in the distance as it was so dark and cloudy.
From there, we walked over the bridge in search for a Christmas market. After a quick Google, we found one called Rue du Mont-Blanc which is supposed to be one of the main Christmas markets, however, it was really tiny and didn’t have a great atmosphere so we didn’t stay for long.
I was then on the search for some traditional cheese fondue and I found a good restaurant, but when we arrived at 4pm, they said they were closing! I asked a few other restaurants if they had the cheese fondue but they either didn’t understand me or didn’t have it! Damn it! We did however go in countless Swiss chocolate shops to admire all of the amazing chocolate.
On our way back, we stopped off at the ‘Broken Chair’ and the United Nations Head Office. They run tours of the United Nations but I think they are early morning so we just had a look from the outside.
By this time, it was starting to get dark so we made our way back to the hotel. I stopped off at a local supermarket called Denner and stocked up on some snacks for the evening. When I got back to my room, I ordered some room service as there wasn’t any restaurants nearby the hotel.
I ended up sleeping around 7pm all the way through! The next day, the wake up call was at 12:10 so there wasn’t really much time to go out or do anything. I stayed in the hotel room, had breakfast and watched a bit of TV.
I had such a nice layover in Geneva, and I’m really glad I swapped onto it! I would really like to visit Zurich next time, particularly in the summer as I’ve heard its beautiful.
Thank you for reading.
