Bangkok, Thailand

I couldn’t have thought of a better way to start my 2019 than being in Bangkok to kick off the New Year’s celebrations. I absolutely love Bangkok and it has a special place in my heart after living there in 2013-14 while studying at Mahidol University as part of a University exchange programme. I was therefore so excited when I saw Bangkok on my roster as I adore the place!

The flight was only 5 and a half hours and as it was a night flight, it was very quiet! We landed in Suvarnabhumi airport at midday and made our way over to our hotel which was in the centre of the city. I couldn’t wait to get out and about so got changed and then headed straight out for some lunch.

During my lunch I sat and FaceTimed my mum so I didn’t get to take a picture of my food but I had a very traditional and local burger and chips!!! Lets just say I’m not the biggest fan of Thai food.

After lunch, I went and treated myself to a 2 hour Thai body massage! I’ve never had a 2 hour massage before but it was the best thing I ever did! I fell asleep after the first minute but it was pure heaven and just what I needed after a flight.

I then walked back to the hotel as I was so relaxed so wanted to have a few hours sleep.

After a quick power nap, I got changed and headed out to Silom night market (Patpong). It was a little disappointing and I remember it being much better last time! Also, as it was New Year’s Eve, a lot of the market sellers were packing up when I arrived.

I then made my way to the Chao Phraya River to watch the fireworks and ring in the New Year! They were absolutely brilliant and it was the longest firework display I’ve ever seen! The river was packed full of people and it was hard to find a good spot to take photos but they were incredible.

After the fireworks, I came back to the hotel and did a face mask before calling my family again and wishing them a Happy New Year. I had a lovely night – much more tame compared to the last time I celebrated New Year’s in Thailand a few years ago at the full moon party on Koh Phangan!!

The next morning, after breakfast I went down to the hotel swimming pool for a few hours before the pick up.

Chill time!

I had the best time in Bangkok and what a way to spend the 1 January, no other than in my favourite city (apart from London and Dubai of course!). Looking forward to an even better year ahead.

Happy New Year!
